An intellectual biography that reconsiders the influence of Aalto's Finnish origins and explores geography as a dominant theme in the history of modern architecture Perhaps no other great modern architect has been linked to a native country as closely as Alvar Aalto Critics have argued that the essence of Finland flows, as if naturally, into his quasi-organic forms, ranging from such buildings as the Baker House in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to iconic 20th-century designs, including his Savoy vase and bent-plywood stacking stools. What did Aalto himself say about the importance of nationalism and geography in his work and in architecture generally? With an unprecedented focus on the architect's own writings, library, and critical reception, Eeva-Liisa Pelkonen proposes a dramatically different interpretation of Aalto's oeuvre, revealing it as a deeply thoughtful response to his intellectual and cultural milieu--especially to Finland's dynamic political circumstances following independence from Russia in Pelkonen also considers the geographic and geopolitical narratives found in his writings. These include ideas about national style and national cultural revival, and about how architecture can foster cosmopolitanism, internationalism, and regionalism. Expanding the canonical reading of Aalto, this work promises to influence future inquiries on Aalto for generations to come.

He never regarded himself as an artist, seeing painting and sculpture as "branches of the tree whose trunk is architecture. Typical for his entire career is a concern for design as a Gesamtkunstwerk , a total work of art , in which he — together with his first wife Aino Aalto — would design the building, and give special treatment to the interior surfaces, furniture, lamps and glassware. His furniture designs are considered Scandinavian Modern , in the sense of a concern for materials, especially wood, and simplification but also technical experimentation, which led him to receiving patents for various manufacturing processes, such as bent wood. In , he then enrolled to study architecture at the Helsinki University of Technology. His studies were interrupted by the Finnish Civil War , in which he fought. In the summer of he began military service, finishing at Hamina reserve officer training school, and was promoted to reserve second lieutenant in June In , while a student, Aalto made his first trip abroad, travelling via Stockholm to Gothenburg , where he briefly found work with architect Arvid Bjerke.

Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians 1 September ; 69 3 : — Like Le Corbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Mies van der Rohe, Alvar Aalto continues to generate interest among different generations of architects, curators, and historians. A comparison of the publication industry supported by these key figures of twentieth-century architecture by way of a search of "title keywords" in the Harvard Hollis Catalog yields hits for Le Corbusier, for Frank Lloyd Wright, for Mies van der Rohe, and for Alvar Aalto. Eeva-Liisa Pelkonen's study Alvar Aalto: Architecture, Modernity, and Geopolitics , is among the most recent and worthwhile additions to the Hollis catalog because it fills a number of voids in Aalto scholarship Figure 1. With the help of archival correspondence, published essays, and design work, Pelkonen constructs a much more complete and nuanced intellectual biography of Aalto than has been done before. Pelkonen's study, the

One could ask: What viewpoints remain undocumented and why should they be presented at this time? To be sure, the interest in Aalto comes and goes with the times. It is at this time that Aalto became considered an exception to the normative. The publication boom during the Aalto centenary was followed by a quieter period, but the interest in Aalto is again reawakening. The result has been a continuous stream of new publications that even manage to reveal new angles. The authors are the Italian-born Vezio Nava, who had been an Aalto employee of long-standing and who has lived in Finland for several decades, and British architect, teacher and critic Harry Charrington, who has published several books and articles about Aalto. The book emphasises an issue that already has been highlighted several times previously: nobody does it alone.
