International Efforts to Counter Al-Shabaab
These are the core obsessions that drive our newsroom—defining topics of seismic importance to the global economy. Our emails are made to shine in your inbox, with something fresh every morning, afternoon, and weekend. At a gas station in Mogadishu recently, the year-old filled up his car and then paid with a few clicks of his phone. In the streets of Mogadishu, the future has arrived: cash is disappearing, credit cards are unnecessary, and daily shopping is speedy and digital. The Hormuud Telecommunication Company, a Somali firm established in during a lull in violence, introduced mobile banking in the East African country around six years ago.
When former prime minister Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo was elected president of the Federal Government of Somalia in , many lauded his victory. Unlike his predecessors, Farmaajo was viewed as a leader who would unite the country because he had a nationalistic mindset and was someone who was not influenced by clan interests. Many believed that, unlike his predecessor, Hassan Sheikh, whose tenure was marred by corruption allegations and in-fighting, he would bring together a country that has remained fragmented along clan lines and endured internal conflicts for decades. He was also perceived to be someone who would address corruption that has been endemic in every Somali government since the days of President Siad Barre. On the contrary, his open hostility towards leaders of federal states — notably Jubbaland, where he is said to have interfered in elections by imposing his own candidate — and claims that corruption in his government had increased, not decreased, left many wondering if he had perhaps been over-rated. Now opposition groups have said that they will not recognise him as the head of state as he has failed to organise the much anticipated one-person-one-vote election that was due this month, which would have either extended or ended his term. This apparent power vacuum has caused some jitters in the international community, whose backing Farmaajo has enjoyed.

Somalia , easternmost country of Africa , on the Horn of Africa. It extends from just south of the Equator northward to the Gulf of Aden and occupies an important geopolitical position between sub-Saharan Africa and the countries of Arabia and southwestern Asia. The capital, Mogadishu , is located just north of the Equator on the Indian Ocean. Somalia is a country of geographic extremes. The climate is mainly dry and hot, with landscapes of thornbush savanna and semidesert, and the inhabitants of Somalia have developed equally demanding economic survival strategies. Apart from a mountainous coastal zone in the north and several pronounced river valleys, most of the country is extremely flat, with few natural barriers to restrict the mobility of the nomads and their livestock.

Mogadishu Then and Now, by Rasna Warah:
This time, however, it was filled not by a single dictator but by fighting clans of violent warlords, including the Soviet-trained strongman Mohamed Farrah Aidid. As it circled the crash scene providing covering fire, a second Blackhawk was shot down. Estimates of Somali militia killed range from several hundred to over a thousand, with another 3, to 4, injured. Now the battle for Mogadishu, Somalia—the incident that was the basis of the book and film Black Hawk Down—is remembered by the men who fought and survived it.
The Mayor of Mogadishu tells the story of one family's epic journey through Somalia's turmoil, from the optimism of independence to its spectacular unravelling. Mohamud 'Tarzan' Nur was born a nomad, and became an orphan, then a street brawler in the cosmopolitan port city of Mogadishu - a place famous for its cafes and open-air cinemas. When Somalia collapsed into civil war, Tarzan and his young family joined the exodus from Mogadishu, eventually spending twenty years in North London. But in Tarzan returned to the unrecognisable ruins of a city largely controlled by the Islamist militants of Al-Shabaab. For some, the new Mayor was a galvanising symbol of defiance.
Search this site. Randal White says "When the Tempest Gathers" is a very different type of book than most military memoirs I have read. It's much better, in fact, I would put it at the top of my favorites.
Mogadishu Then and Now, by Rasna Warah:
Somalia was an important centre for commerce with the rest of the ancient world, and according to most scholars, it is among the most probable locations of the fabled ancient Land of Punt. During the Middle Ages, several powerful Somali states and port towns dominated the regional trade, the Mogadishu Sultanate and Ajuran Sultanate both centered around the port town Mogadishu , but also the port towns of Barawe and Merca. In the late 19th century, through a succession of treaties with these kingdoms, the British and Italians gained control of parts of the coast, and established British Somaliland and Italian Somaliland. In the northern parts, Mohammed Abdullah Hassan 's Dervish movement successfully repulsed the British Empire four times and forced it to retreat to the coastal region, but the Dervishes were finally defeated in by British airpower. Northwestern Somalia would remain a protectorate , while northeastern, central and southern Somalia by agreement became a United Nations Trusteeship on 1 April , with a promise of independence after 10 years. On 1 July , the two regions united as planned to form the independent Somali Republic under a civilian government. Ancient Somalia domesticated the camel somewhere between the third millennium and second millennium BCE from where it spread to Ancient Egypt and North Africa.
Since the al-Shabaab The Youth took control of most of south and central Somalia in , no Somali force or coalition of forces has developed the capacity to counter the al-Qaeda affiliated organization. Militias under the control of Somali warlords were largely a spent force before al-Shabaab seized much of Somalia. The international community has trained a significant number of Somali Transitional Federal Government TFG forces, but they have not yet achieved the numbers, tenacity and ability on their own to challenge al-Shabaab. It does not help that periodically they are not paid, a problem that recurred recently for some of them. As a result, foreign military forces, often with the assistance of allied Somali troops, have taken on the task of trying to dislodge al-Shabaab from south and central Somalia.

A suicide bomber detonated the car loaded with explosives outside the popular Lul Yemeni restaurant near the Mogadishu port. A medical official said 20 people were confirmed dead and 30 others wounded. The attack was claimed by the Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab group. Mogadishu is regularly targeted with attacks by Al-Shabaab who have been waging a long and violent insurgency seeking to unseat the internationally backed government in Mogadishu. They were driven out of Mogadishu in , but still control swathes of territory from where they plan and launch frequent, deadly strikes against government and civilian targets. Ahmed nods patiently, asks questions and listens attentively. They have very little — and urgently need food and medicine, shelter and health care. As the longest-serving UN humanitarian affairs officer in the capital, Ahmed has heard many similar heart-breaking tales before. I can say that, before, this was a peaceful city. It was paradise. Now, these people living here have lost everything, their property, opportunities for education.
