Cycle‐Length Variants in Periodized Strength/Power Training

The wait is finally over. The rugby season has officially kicked off in the southern hemisphere. As a strength and conditioning coach it immediately becomes apparent the challenges that the players will face in trying to maintain their strength and power that was developed over the pre-season. Rugby League has a gruelling long season, which includes 24 rounds plus finals, not including trial games.

The body is beaten up and players are in a constant state of recovery. The in-season therefore becomes the dominant training period of the year. Over the years I have manipulated the program to align with my philosophy, however the core of the program remains in place.

He is the current president of the Australian Strength and Conditioning Association, holds a PhD, trained the Brisbane Broncos to 4 premierships whist being there 19 years, and known for his no BS approach to training.

Personally I have also seen this, with even greater improvements with athletes with a low training age. In summary there is approximately two days of lifting per week In-season:. Personally I am lucky because traditionally in-season we have a 7 day turn around which allows us to get both days of lifting in. However sometimes with a short turn around only day 1 will be completed.

I have found this set up has worked for us best:. We also hit unilateral leg work in our robustness circuit before each strength session. C Posterior Chain Lower 2 weeks eccentric focus, 2 weeks isometric focus, 2 weeks concentric focus.

For example we utilize exercises such as heavy sled drags, dominator machine for front row forwards. On the main lifts I like to provide my athletes with a load based off percentages. As we know from research 1RM changes daily depending on a multitude of factors effecting readiness. I feel by providing a specific load an athlete has a great starting point. They are allowed to slightly modify the weight if they feel it should be slightly different.

On the supplementary strength and hypertrophy exercises I generally allow athletes to choose the weight depending on rating of perceived exertion RPE. They simply fill the weights into their program and adjust week to week depending on the number of repetitions. I tend to keep the main lifts similar whilst providing variation in the assistance exercises.

Daniel Baker The DVD is intended as a basic resource to guide the implementation of a child and youth resistance training program using body-weight as the primary resistance modality. The manual and scoring tables contained within it, offer a very simplified method to help determine if a youth has achieved some basic level of physical competences and is ready to progress from body-weight training to higher intensity of heavier bar-bell training under the supervision of an ASCA accredited coach. Daniel Baker The Manual used in conjunction with the DVD illustrates how to implement a program of bodyweight conditioning in a simple manner, listing hundreds of exercise progressions that cannot fully be covered in the DVD and therefore is highly recommended for schools and clubs. Daniel Baker. Back when I joined that club the early s there was very little good strength training research available and no way of learning the practical things like lifting technique, how to coach, etc from university courses. In fact I was taught in 2nd year exercise physiology that lifting weights was old fashioned, that isokinetics would soon take over as they were much more effective!

Relationships and Team Dynamics

The Course consists of five videos presented by Dan Baker who is a world leading strength and conditioning coach on the benefits of using bands and chains as well as timed sets, cluster sets, functional isometrics and complex training. The videos are a combination of the theory behind using the Bands, Chains and Advanced Power Training Methods as well as demonstrations on how to practically apply them in a gym environment. The theory is supported throughout the videos by research that Dan and other researchers have carried out over the last 20 years. After watching the five videos and reading the supporting PDF files which cover the content from the videos you complete a multiple-choice exam in which you are given 60 minutes to complete. I would highly recommend this course to anyone that is interested in increasing their knowledge of using bands, chains and advanced training methods in strength and conditioning or anyone that wants to further there knowledge of strength and conditioning. The course not only provides practical demonstrations but also supports it with the theory and research to support the exercises which allowed me to increase my knowledge of this area a lot quicker than I would if I had to watch videos from the internet then go and read research papers to understand the theory. EXOS have listed the course objectives as:.

Field sports are sports such as soccer, rugby union and rugby league, Australian Rules football AFL , Gaelic football and field hockey. However despite the often stop-start nature of these sports, which heralds an increase in anaerobic energy contributions 10 , high-intensity aerobic power and conditioning can be critical for success in field sports 4. The purpose of this article is to detail a number of methods to develop high intensity aerobic conditioning and describe the practical implementation and integration of these methods into the Preparation Period training for field sport athletes. Accordingly, given the greater results and less time investment, it was considered that the high intensity training was much more efficacious than LSD training. This type of training is typically now known as the Tabata method.
