Envy, Jealousy, Greed: A Kleinian/Transpersonal approach

William A. Cohen; Envy and Victorian Fiction. Novel 1 August ; 42 2 : — Among the many elements that divert the nineteenth-century novel's plot and characters from achieving their ends—and thus keep such narratives moving—envy occupies a special place. Envy is so psychologically powerful that it often threatens not only to irretrievably derail the prototypical marriage plot but also to undermine one of the novel's principal ethical aims: to develop a capacity for sympathy among characters and readers. Compared with some other emotions, envy has received relatively little literary-critical attention, but its formative place in the psychoanalytic theory of Melanie Klein begins to suggest why it should have such a consequential literary role. Attending to the primitive, destructive, and relational qualities that Klein associates with this affect enables us to identify a literary current of envy—one that elucidates the emotionally violent, socially destructive impulses that psychically inhere in relations among characters as well as between characters and readers.

Kleinian theory seems both intimidating and alien to many American psychotherapists. This paper offers an entry into Klein's work. The theory is approached by emphasizing three areas especially valuable in clinical practice: mourning and manic defenses, schizoid relationships, and envy and idealization. A detailed presentation of an individual psychotherapy case is offered as an illustration of how her ideas may be integrated into a broader objectrelations treatment perspective. Winnicott complains that infancy here is approached in the way Freud looked at the toddler, through the analysis of children and adults. For Winnicott, the infant is not engaged in splitting love from hatred so much as in fusing into his own erotic potential the essential motility and the variable aggressive components of normal infant growth. To talk of hatred in this context is, for Winnicott, to indicate that earliest infancy is not being described.

The Kleinian psychoanalytic school of thought, of which Melanie Klein was a pioneer, considers envy to be crucial in understanding both love and gratitude. Klein defines envy as "the angry feeling that another person possesses and enjoys something desirable — the envious impulse being to take it away or to spoil it" projective identification. Klein , p Envy leads the child to phantasise about entering the primal good object the good breast and debase the good object specifically because it is good. This phantasy is a manifestation of the death instinct , where bad feelings are directed towards both good and bad objects, leading to confusion between the two Hinshelwood,
