In this article, we describe experiences with dialogue evenings within a research collaboration on long-term care and dementia in the Netherlands. We argue that learning took place in three different articulations. First, participants learnt to expand their notion of knowledge.

Ethnography

As a research methodology that has continually reflected on and revised its practices and modes of presentation, ethnography is boundless. Yet minus its political, ethical, and historical moorings, I argue, the complexities of twenty-first-century society render its future uncertain. In , he was given a chance to travel to New Guinea accompanying anthropologist Robert Ranulph Marett , but as World War I broke out and Malinowski was an Austrian subject, and thereby an enemy of the British commonwealth , he was unable to travel back to England. The Australian government nonetheless provided him with permission and funds to undertake ethnographic work within their territories and Malinowski chose to go to the Trobriand Islands , in Melanesia where he stayed for several years, studying the indigenous culture. Upon his return to England after the war, he published his main work Argonauts of the Western Pacific , which established him as one of the most important anthropologists in Europe of that time. He took posts as lecturer and later as a chair in anthropology at the LSE, attracting large numbers of students and exerting great influence on the development of British social anthropology. Among his students in this period were such prominent anthropologists as Raymond Firth , E. From he visited several American universities, and when World War II began, he decided to stay there, taking an appointment at Yale University.

Moving Stories: Beyond the Local in Ethnography and Fiction

As a form of inquiry, ethnography relies heavily on participant observation —on the researcher participating in the setting or with the people being studied, at least in some marginal role, and seeking to document, in detail, patterns of social interaction and the perspectives of participants, and to understand these in their local contexts. It had its origin in social and cultural anthropology in the early twentieth century, but spread to other social science disciplines, notably sociology, during the course of that century. Ethnographers mainly use qualitative methods, though they may also employ quantitative data. The typical ethnography is a holistic study [4] [5] and so includes a brief history, and an analysis of the terrain , the climate , and the habitat. A wide range of group and organisation have been studied by this method, including traditional communities, youth gangs , religious cults , and organisations of various kinds. While, traditionally, ethnography has relied on the physical presence of the researcher in a setting, there is research using the label that has relied on interviews or documents, sometimes to investigate events in the past such as the NASA Challenger disaster.
