Then, participants had to choose from nine pictorial depictions representing the protagonists in the story on a vertical line, with varying degrees of status distance.

The Role of Indian Caste Identity and Caste Inconsistent Norms on Status Representation

Paper presented at an Anthropology Seminar taught by Dr. Goldenweiser Columbia University 9th May Text first printed in: Indian Antiquary Vol. XLVI May In my opinion a student of Ethnology, in one sense at least, is much like the guide. Like his prototype, he holds up perhaps with more seriousness and desire of self-instruction the social institutions to view, with all the objectiveness humanly possible, and inquires into their origin and function.

Structural-Functional approach in the study of society emerged from the writings of early thinkers like August Comte, Herbert Spencer and Emile Durkheim during the later part of 19th century and became a predominant trend in sociology, anthropology and other social sciences during the first half of 20th century. Functional approach to the study of society views society in terms of its constituent parts and their relationship with each other in order to maintain the society as a whole. Radcliffe-Brown defines function of any social institution in terms of the contribution it makes to the maintenance of the whole society. In India, Structural-functional approach had been a predominant approach since the s till the end of the 20th century. According to M N Srinivas there are basically two ways of understanding our society i. Book view is to understand the society from the books and literature available and is otherwise known as Indological approach.

11 Books to Read If You Want to Understand Caste in India

Each one of them was written in response to a specific invitation to contribute to a seminar, symposium or learned publication. In each case there was a deadline, and as everyone knows, meeting the deadline frequently involves a compromise with one's conscience. But it is also true that, in many cases, the essay would not have been written but for the deadline. The essays are on a wide variety of topics, and I would like to stress the fact that they were written over a period of eight years. My views have naturally undergone a certain amount of change during this time but I have refrained from making any except minor verbal alterations in the essays.

Caste is not unique to India, and no country should be reduced to a single social category, no matter how intrinsic a part of its reality. Nevertheless, to understand India you have to understand caste, whose intricacies are unarguably difficult. It is not just one of the most prominent social features of India; it is at the heart of many of the past and present fissures of the country. I grew up in India living the reality of caste every day. Even so I had to learn, and unlearn, many things about caste while completing my two most recent books: the novel Ghost in the Tamarind , which narrates an inter-caste romance between a Brahmin man and a Dalit woman against the backdrop of powerful anti-caste movements in southern India; and a co-edited collection of academic essays on caste and life narratives.

Caste in Modern India - M.N. Srinivas
