History of Mold Making and Casting

In this course students will learn how to take advantage of 3D modeling and printing as it applies to the traditional ceramic practice of slip casting. Students will study the aesthetic qualities of sculptural form as well as the technical aspects of the process.

Online meeting will be synchronous — which means we will meet for online or in-person classes on Friday 10am — pm. Students will only be allowed on campus to use facilitates that are approved for hybrid courses and only students enrolled in those courses.

All students, staff, and faculty will be required to wear masks and keep 6 ft between yourself and others. The rooms and equipment will be set up to follow those requirements. Only come to campus to use the approved facilities for approved courses. Do not come to campus without express permission from me or without an approved appointment.

At the close of this course the successful student will have a comprehensive understanding of 3D modeling in solids, preparing files for 3D printing, and the process of slip casting. They will expand their vocabulary to include the proper terminology for creating and critiquing sculptural form as well as the major components of the technical process.

They will demonstrate the ability to think creatively, form project ideas, and follow those ideas from conception to realization. Students will have a sound understanding of how new digital tools and technologies can advance traditional artistic practices. Students will be expected to complete all assignments on time and to the best of their ability.

Students are expected to attend every class but life does happen so you get 3 absences, after that you lose a letter grade for every absence. Be on time please; for every 3 times you are late you will lose a letter grade. We will have a final critique; attendance is required. We will only have a short time for each group, being punctual is essential. We will disinfect our areas after each group — the space and equipment will be clean and disinfected between each group. Students are expected to have their own facial covering and gloves while on campus.

A detailed schedule will be formed and shared with you once finalized. You will have to make appointments to use the facilities during open lab time.

Slip casting, for me, has always been one of the most difficult art-making processes to get right. I find a one-piece mold of a tapered cup is the easiest way to start.

This is a step by step tutorial on how to slip cast. Slip casting can be useful for making multiples of one object and to make casts that are hollow on the inside.

Slipcasting or slip casting is a ceramic forming technique for pottery and other ceramics , especially for shapes not easily made on a wheel. In slipcasting, a liquid clay body slip usually mixed in a blunger is poured into plaster moulds and allowed to form a layer, the cast, on the inside walls of the mould. The process usually takes at least 24 hours per piece.

Mold making and casting are central techniques in the history of art and design. In the world of art, the techniques of mold making and casting have served as tools by sculptors and other artists: in both studies that lead to the final form of an artwork, or as a means of reproducing an artwork. And increasingly, contemporary artists see them as the work of art in and of themselves. But these processes also play leading roles outside of fine art, and support areas as varied as scientific research and mass manufacture in the automotive industries. Many of the decorative and everyday objects you yourselves use have been made through various mold making processes!
