Crime and Punishment
Look Inside. Is it not just, he reasons, for a man of genius to commit such a crime, to transgress moral law—if it will ultimately benefit humanity? So begins one of the greatest novels ever written: a powerful psychological study, a terrifying murder mystery, a fascinating detective thriller infused with philosophical, religious and social commentary. Raskolnikov, an impoverished student living in a garret in the gloomy slums of St. Petersburg, carries out his grotesque scheme and plunges into a hell of persecution, madness and terror. Crime and Punishment opens in s St. Petersburg, where Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov , an impoverished former student, has come psychologically unhinged. Upon leaving, he repeats to himself his intentions: he will murder the old crone and rob her. Raskolnikov meets a drunk named Marmeladov , who tells of his troubles and his daughter Sonya , a prostitute. Raskolnikov receives a letter from his mother Pulcheria , who reports that his sister Dunya , once a governess working for the Svidrigailov family, has been courted by Mr. Svidrigailov , fired by Mrs.
The story was conceived by the author when he lost his fortune in gambling and was unable to lead a basic life. Rodion Raskolnikov an ex-student in St. Petersburg plots and executes the killing of a pawnbroker and elderly woman named Alyona Ivanovna and her half-sister Lizaveta, an eyewitness of the murder. Shaken by his own actions and in contrast to his plot for the crime for ransom, he flees with a handful of items leaving sizeable wealth. Though he has managed to leave without any evidence of his murder, he was obsessed over the murder. While wandering in the streets, he finds an accident and save the victim named Marmeladov and take him to his house. He learns from Marmeladov, that her daughter Sonya has become a prostitute to support his family.

We recommend it to all lovers of psychological novels and to those that enjoy Russian classics.

Raskolnikov was not used to crowds, and, as we said before, he avoided society of every sort, more especially of late. But now all at once he felt a desire to be with other people. Something new seemed to be taking place within him, and with it he felt a sort of thirst for company. He was so weary after a whole month of concentrated wretchedness and gloomy excitement that he longed to rest, if only for a moment, in some other world, whatever it might be; and, in spite of the filthiness of the surroundings, he was glad now to stay in the tavern. The master of the establishment was in another room, but he frequently came down some steps into the main room, his jaunty, tarred boots with red turn-over tops coming into view each time before the rest of his person.
